Were Some Appointed to
Disobedience? 1 Peter 2:6-9
1 Pe 2:6-9 says: “Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, ‘Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.’ Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, ‘The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone,’ and ‘A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.’ They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed. [kaiv, Livqo" proskovmmato", kaiv pevtra skandavlou:oi} proskovptousi tw`/ lovgw/, ajpeiqou`nte": eij" o} kai; ejtevqhsan] 9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
“Their disobedience is not ordained, the penalty of their disobedience is.” Bigg, wrote in the ICC, St. Peter and St. Jude, p. 133, “The antecedent to eij" o{ is the main verb proskovptousi: this follows as a necessary consequence from the subordination of the participle. . . . The sense, therefore, is “they disobey, and for that reason stumble”; “because they disobey, God ordains that they shall stumble.” In other words, the adverbial prepositional phrase is modifying the verb, ejtevqhsan, they were appointed, but looking back to the content of the verb proskovptousi. Consider the following passages, then read the context of 1 Pe 2:8.
John 11:9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks
in the day, he does not stumble [ouj proskovptei], because he sees the light of this world.
2 Pe 1:10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble [ouj mhv ptaivshtev pote]. The natural result of their disobedience is their stumbling. The participle, being disobedient, is the reason for their stumbling.
Isa 8:14,15 He will be as a sanctuary, but a stone of stumbling and a rock of
offense to both the houses of Israel as a trap and a snare to the inhabitants
of Jerusalem. 15 And many among them shall stumble; They shall fall and be
broken, be snared and taken.
Mat 21:42-44 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone
which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This was the Lord’s doing and it is marvelous in our
eyes’? 43 Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and
given to a nation bearing the fruits of it. 44 And whoever falls on this stone
will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”
Rom 9:32,33 Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as
it were, by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone [prosevkoyan

33 As it is written: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of
offense, and whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”
