The Key to 1 Thessalonians & the Rapture
1 Th
1:9,10 is the key for understanding the structure of 1 Thessalonians,
for Paul seems to enlarge on this opening statement throughout the rest of the
book.
“For they themselves declare concerning us what manner
of entry we had to you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the
living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven [the rapture],
whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to
come [the tribulation].
Notice two
things in verse ten. They were to wait for His Son from heaven, and they were
going to be delivered from the coming wrath. 1 Th 4:13-18 developed our
waiting for His Son from heaven.
1 Th 4:13-18 But I do not want you to be
ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as
others who have no hope.14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again,
even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.15 For this we say to
you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the
coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep.16 For the
Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an
archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise
first.17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together
with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always
be with the Lord.18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.
Now 5:1-11,23,24
develops the wrath and our deliverance from it.
1 Th 5:1-11 But concerning the times and the
seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. 2 For you
yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the
night.[1]
3 For when they say, “Peace and
safety!” then sudden destruction comes
upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. 4 But you,
brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief.[2]
5
You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of
darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be
sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk
at night. 8 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate
of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For God did not
appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, [oti ouk eqeto hma"

Notice, the
negative here, that God did not appoint one thing. Then the positive, He did
appoint another thing. He didn’t appoint us to wrath, the wrath of the tribulation.
What He did do was appoint us for a gaining of salvation [or deliverance from
that wrath].
10 who died for us, that whether we wake or
sleep, we should live together with Him. 11 Therefore comfort each other and
edify one another, just as you also are doing.
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you
completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless in
the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ. [auto" de o qeo" th" eirhnh" agiasai

He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.
[1]This phrase only occurs here and 2 Peter 3:3-14 knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5 For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, 6 by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. 7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. 8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not counseling any to perish but [counseling] all to have room for repentance. [mh boulomeno" tina" apolesqai alla panta" ei" metanoian cwrhsai] 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 14 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless.
[2]There are many references which show that light=salvation, dark=lost. Here is a number of them: Mat 6:22-23 The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! Jo 1:4-9 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John 7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world. Jo 3:19-21 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 "But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God. Jo 8:12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life. Jo 12:35-36 Then Jesus said to them, A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light. These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them. Jo 12:46 I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. Acts 26:17-18 I will deliver you from the Jewish people, as well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, 18 to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me. 2 Co 4:3-7 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. 5 For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus' sake. 6 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. 2 Co 6:14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? Eph 1:17-18 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, Eph 4:17-18 This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; Eph 5:3-14 But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; 4 neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not be partakers with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. 14 Therefore He says: Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light. 1 Pet 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 1 Jo 2:8-11 Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining. 9 He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. 10 He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11 But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
