PROPHETS AND PROPHECY
What is a prophet? A prophet is a spokesman. In the Bible a
prophet is usually a spokesman for the Lord.
1 Sa 9:14 So they went
up to the city. As they were coming into the city, there was Samuel, coming out
toward them on his way up to the high place. 15 Now the LORD had told Samuel in
his ear the day before Saul came, saying, 16 “Tomorrow about this time I will
send you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him commander
over My people Israel, that he may save My people from the hand of the
Philistines; for I have looked upon My people, because their cry has come to
me.”
2 Ki 20:1-5 In those
days Hezekiah was sick and near death. And Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz,
went to him and said to him, “Thus says the LORD: ‘Set your house in order, for
you shall die, and not live.’ “ 2 Then he turned his face toward the wall, and
prayed to the LORD, saying, 3 “Remember now, O LORD, I pray, how I have walked
before You in truth and with a loyal heart, and have done what was good in Your
sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly. 4 And it happened, before Isaiah had gone
out into the middle court, that the word of the LORD came to him, saying, 5
“Return and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people, ‘Thus says the LORD, the God
of David your father: “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely
I will heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the LORD.”
Jer 1:5-10 “Before
I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I
ordained you a prophet to the nations.” 6 Then said I: “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I
cannot speak, for I am a youth.” 7 But the LORD said to me: “Do not say, ‘I am
a youth,’ For you shall go to all to whom I send you, and whatever I command
you, you shall speak. 8 Do not be afraid of their faces, for I am with you to
deliver you,” says the LORD. 9 Then the LORD put forth His hand and touched my
mouth, and the LORD said to me: “Behold, I have put My words in your mouth. 10
See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root
out and to pull down, to destroy and to throw down, to build and to plant.”
Acts 2:29-31
“Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he
is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore,
being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the
fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit
on his throne, 31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the
Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.”
Prophets were especially sent by God with warnings from the
Lord.
2 Ki 17:11-13 “There
they burned incense on all the high places, like the nations whom the LORD had
carried away before them; and they did wicked things to provoke the LORD to
anger, 12 for they served idols, of which the LORD had said to them, “You shall
not do this thing.” 13 Yet the LORD testified against Israel and against Judah,
by all of His prophets, every seer, saying, “Turn from your evil ways, and keep
My commandments and My statutes, according to all the law which I commanded
your fathers, and which I sent to you by My servants the prophets.”
2 Ki 17:23 “until the
LORD removed Israel out of His sight, as He had said by all His servants the
prophets. So Israel was carried away from their own land to Assyria, as it is
to this day.”
2 Ki 21:10 And the LORD
spoke by His servants the prophets, saying, 11 “Because Manasseh king of Judah
has done these abominations (he has acted more wickedly than all the Amorites
who were before him, and has also made Judah sin with his idols), 12 therefore
thus says the LORD God of Israel: ‘Behold, I am bringing such calamity upon
Jerusalem and Judah, that whoever hears of it, both his ears will tingle. 13
And I will stretch over Jerusalem the measuring line of Samaria and the plummet
of the house of Ahab; I will wipe Jerusalem as one wipes a dish, wiping it and
turning it upside down. 14 So I will forsake the remnant of My inheritance and
deliver them into the hand of their enemies; and they shall become victims of
plunder to all their enemies, 15 because they have done evil in My sight, and
have provoked Me to anger since the day their fathers came out of Egypt, even
to this day.’”
2 Ki 22:3,10-20 Now it
came to pass, in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, that the king sent Shaphan
the scribe, the son of Azaliah, the son of Meshullam, to the house of the LORD
. . . . 10 Then Shaphan the scribe showed the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest
has given me a book.” And Shaphan read it before the king. 11 Now it happened,
when the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, that he tore his clothes.
12 Then the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam the son of Shaphan,
Achbor the son of Michaiah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the
king, saying, 13 “Go, inquire of the LORD for me, for the people and for all
Judah, concerning the words of this book that has been found; for great is the
wrath of the LORD that is aroused against us, because our fathers have not
obeyed the words of this book, to do according to all that is written
concerning us.” 14 So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah
went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son
of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe. (She dwelt in Jerusalem in the Second
Quarter.) And they spoke with her. 15 Then she said to them, “Thus says the
LORD God of Israel, ‘Tell the man who sent you to Me, 16 “Thus says the LORD:
‘Behold, I will bring calamity on this place and on its inhabitants; all the
words of the book which the king of Judah has read; 17 because they have
forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke Me to
anger with all the works of their hands. Therefore My wrath shall be aroused
against this place and shall not be quenched.’ 18 But as for the king of Judah,
who sent you to inquire of the LORD, in this manner you shall speak to him,
‘Thus says the LORD God of Israel: “Concerning the words which you have heard;
19 because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before the LORD when
you heard what I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants, that
they would become a desolation and a curse, and you tore your clothes and wept
before Me, I also have heard you,” says the LORD. 20 “Surely, therefore, I will
gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace;
and your eyes shall not see all the calamity which I will bring on this
place.”’ So they brought back word to the king.”
2 Ki 24:2,18-21 And
the LORD sent against him raiding bands of Chaldeans, bands of Syrians, bands
of Moabites, and bands of the people of Ammon; He sent them against Judah to
destroy it, according to the word of the LORD which He had spoken by His
servants the prophets. 18 Therefore they left the house of the LORD God of
their fathers, and served wooden images and idols; and wrath came upon Judah
and Jerusalem because of their trespass. 19 Yet He sent prophets to them, to
bring them back to the LORD; and they testified against them, but they would
not listen. 20 Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada
the priest, who stood above the people, and said to them, “Thus says God: ‘Why
do you transgress the commandments of the LORD, so that you cannot prosper?
Because you have forsaken the LORD, He also has forsaken you.’” 21 So they
conspired against him, and at the command of the king they stoned him with
stones in the court of the house of the LORD.
Neh 9:30 Yet
for many years You had patience with them, and testified against them by Your
Spirit in Your prophets. Yet they would not listen; Therefore You gave them
into the hand of the peoples of the lands.
God expected repentance when the Prophet brought His message.
Jer 18:1-11 The word
which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying: 2 “Arise and go down to the
potter’s house, and there I will cause you to hear My words.” 3 Then I went
down to the potter’s house, and there he was, making something at the wheel. 4
And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he
made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make. 5
Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying: 6 “O house of Israel, can I not
do with you as this potter?” says the LORD. “Look, as the clay is in the
potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel! 7 The instant I speak
concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, to pull down, and to
destroy it, 8 if that nation against whom I have spoken turns from its evil, I
will repent of the disaster that I thought to bring upon it. 9 And the instant
I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it,
10 if it does evil in My sight so that it does not obey My voice, then I will
repent concerning the good with which I said I would benefit it. 11 Now
therefore, speak to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem,
saying, ‘Thus says the LORD: “Behold, I am fashioning a disaster and devising a
plan against you. Return now every one from his evil way, and make your ways
and your doings good.”’”
Eze 18:19-32 “Yet you
say, ‘Why should the son not bear the guilt of the father?’ Because the son has
done what is lawful and right, and has kept all My statutes and observed them,
he shall surely live. 20 The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear
the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness
of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall
be upon himself. 21 But if a wicked man turns from all his sins which he has
committed, keeps all My statutes, and does what is lawful and right, he shall
surely live; he shall not die. 22 None of the transgressions which he has
committed shall be remembered against him; because of the righteousness which
he has done, he shall live. 23 Do I have any pleasure at all that the wicked
should die?” says the Lord GOD, “and not that he should turn from his ways and
live? 24 But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits
iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does,
shall he live? All the righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered;
because of the unfaithfulness of which he is guilty and the sin which he has
committed, because of them he shall die. 25 Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord
is not fair.’ Hear now, O house of Israel, is it not My way which is fair, and
your ways which are not fair? 26 When a righteous man turns away from his
righteousness, commits iniquity, and dies in it, it is because of the iniquity
which he has done that he dies. 27 Again, when a wicked man turns away from the
wickedness which he committed, and does what is lawful and right, he preserves
himself alive. 28 Because he considers and turns away from all the
transgressions which he committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 29
Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ O house of
Israel, is it not My ways which are fair, and your ways which are not fair? 30
Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his
ways,” says the Lord GOD. “Repent, and turn from all your transgressions, so
that iniquity will not be your ruin. 31 Cast away from you all the
transgressions which you have committed, and get yourselves a new heart and a
new spirit. For why should you die, O house of Israel? 32 For I have no
pleasure in the death of one who dies,” says the Lord GOD. “Therefore turn and
live!”
Neh 9:26
“Nevertheless they were disobedient and rebelled against You, cast Your law
behind their backs and killed Your prophets, who testified against them to turn
them to Yourself; And they worked great provocations.”
Jer 7:23-29
“But this is what I commanded them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your
God, and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded
you, that it may be well with you.’ 24 “Yet they did not obey or incline their
ear, but followed the counsels and the dictates of their evil hearts, and went
backward and not forward. 25 “Since the day that your fathers came out of the
land of Egypt until this day, I have even sent to you all My servants the
prophets, daily rising up early and sending them. 26 “Yet they did not obey Me
or incline their ear, but stiffened their neck. They did worse than their
fathers. 27 “Therefore you shall speak all these words to them, but they will not
obey you. You shall also call to them, but they will not answer you. 28 “So you
shall say to them, ‘This is a nation that does not obey the voice of the LORD
their God nor receive correction. Truth has perished and has been cut off from
their mouth. 29 ‘Cut off your hair and cast it away, and take up a lamentation
on the desolate heights; for the LORD has rejected and forsaken the generation
of His wrath.’
Jer 25:1-13 The
word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah, in the fourth
year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah (which was the first year of
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon), 2 which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the
people of Judah and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying: 3 “From the
thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even to this day,
this is the twenty-third year in which the word of the LORD has come to me; and
I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, but you have not listened. 4
And the LORD has sent to you all His servants the prophets, rising early and
sending them, but you have not listened nor inclined your ear to hear. 5 They
said, ‘Repent now everyone of his evil way and his evil doings, and dwell in
the land that the LORD has given to you and your fathers forever and ever. 6 Do
not go after other gods to serve them and worship them, and do not provoke Me
to anger with the works of your hands; and I will not harm you.’ 7 Yet you have
not listened to Me,” says the LORD, “that you might provoke Me to anger with
the works of your hands to your own hurt. 8 Therefore thus says the LORD of
hosts: ‘Because you have not heard My words, 9 behold, I will send and take all
the families of the north,’ says the LORD, ‘and Nebuchadnezzar the king of
Babylon, My servant, and will bring them against this land, against its
inhabitants, and against these nations all around, and will utterly destroy
them, and make them an astonishment, a hissing, and perpetual desolations. 10
Moreover I will take from them the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness,
the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the sound of the
millstones and the light of the lamp. 11 And this whole land shall be a
desolation and an astonishment, and these nations shall serve the king of
Babylon seventy years. 12 Then it will come to pass, when seventy years are
completed, that I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of
the Chaldeans, for their iniquity,’ says the LORD; ‘and I will make it a
perpetual desolation. 13 So I will bring on that land all My words which I have
pronounced against it, all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah has
prophesied concerning all the nations.’”
Jer 29:15-19
Because you have said, “The LORD has raised up prophets for us in Babylon”; 16
therefore thus says the LORD concerning the king who sits on the throne of
David, concerning all the people who dwell in this city, and concerning your
brethren who have not gone out with you into captivity; 17 thus says the LORD
of hosts: Behold, I will send on them the sword, the famine, and the
pestilence, and will make them like rotten figs that cannot be eaten, they are
so bad. 18 And I will pursue them with the sword, with famine, and with
pestilence; and I will deliver them to trouble among all the kingdoms of the
earth; to be a curse, an astonishment, a hissing, and a reproach among all the
nations where I have driven them, 19 because they have not heeded My words,
says the LORD, which I sent to them by My servants the prophets, rising up
early and sending them; neither would you heed,” says the LORD.
Jer 32:27-36
“Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for
Me? 28 Therefore thus says the LORD: ‘Behold, I will give this city into the
hand of the Chaldeans, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he
shall take it. 29 And the Chaldeans who fight against this city shall come and
set fire to this city and burn it, with the houses on whose roofs they have
offered incense to Baal and poured out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke
Me to anger; 30 because the children of Israel and the children of Judah have
done only evil before Me from their youth. For the children of Israel have
provoked Me only to anger with the work of their hands,” says the LORD. 31 For
this city has been to Me a provocation of My anger and My fury from the day
that they built it, even to this day; so I will remove it from before My face
32 because of all the evil of the children of Israel and the children of Judah,
which they have done to provoke Me to anger; they, their kings, their princes,
their priests, their prophets, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of
Jerusalem. 33 And they have turned to Me the back, and not the face; though I
taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not listened to
receive instruction. 34 But they set their abominations in the house which is
called by My name, to defile it. 35 And they built the high places of Baal
which are in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their
daughters to pass through the fire to Molech, which I did not command them, nor
did it come into My mind that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah
to sin.’ 36 Now therefore, thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning
this city of which you say, ‘It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of
Babylon by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence.’”
Jer 35:15-19 “I
have also sent to you all My servants the prophets, rising up early and sending
them, saying, ‘Turn now everyone from his evil way, amend your doings, and do
not go after other gods to serve them; then you will dwell in the land which I
have given you and your fathers.’ But you have not inclined your ear, nor
obeyed Me. 16 Surely the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the
commandment of their father, which he commanded them, but this people has not
obeyed Me. 17 Therefore thus says the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel:
‘Behold, I will bring on Judah and on all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the
doom that I have pronounced against them; because I have spoken to them but
they have not heard, and I have called to them but they have not answered.’” 18
And Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites, “Thus says the LORD of hosts,
the God of Israel: ‘Because you have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your
father, and kept all his precepts and done according to all that he commanded
you, 19 therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: “Jonadab the
son of Rechab shall not lack a man to stand before Me forever.”’”
Jer 44:2-6
“Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘You have seen all the
calamity that I have brought on Jerusalem and on all the cities of Judah; and
behold, this day they are a desolation, and no one dwells in them, 3 because of
their wickedness which they have committed to provoke Me to anger, in that they
went to burn incense and to serve other gods whom they did not know, they nor
you nor your fathers. 4 However I have sent to you all My servants the
prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, “Oh, do not do this abominable
thing that I hate!” 5 But they did not listen or incline their ear to turn from
their wickedness, to burn no incense to other gods. 6 So My fury and My anger
were poured out and kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of
Jerusalem; and they are wasted and desolate, as it is this day.’”
Zec 1:1-4 In
the eighth month of the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to
Zechariah the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying, 2 “The
LORD has been very angry with your fathers. 3 Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says
the LORD of hosts: “Return to Me,” says the LORD of hosts, “and I will return
to you,” says the LORD of hosts. 4 “Do not be like your fathers, to whom the
former prophets preached, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Turn now from
your evil ways and your evil deeds.”’ But they did not hear nor heed Me,” says
the LORD.”
Acts 3:21-25
“whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which
God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began. 22
For Moses truly said to the fathers, ‘The LORD your God will raise up for you a
Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear in all things, whatever
He says to you. 23 And it shall be that every soul who will not hear that
Prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.’ 24 Yes, and all the
prophets, from Samuel and those who follow, as many as have spoken, have also
foretold these days. 25 You are sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which
God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your seed all the
families of the earth shall be blessed.’”
Sometimes God sent His prophets with instructions.
Ezr 5:1 Then the
prophet Haggai and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophets, prophesied to the Jews
who were in Judah and Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel, who was over
them. 2 So Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak rose
up and began to build the house of God which is in Jerusalem; and the prophets
of God were with them, helping them.
Ezr 6:14 So the elders
of the Jews built, and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the
prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they built and finished it,
according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the command
of Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia.
Sometimes God used prophets to bring good
news.
Rom 1:1 Paul, a
bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of
God 2 which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, 3
concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David
according to the flesh.
1 Pe 1:10 “Of
this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who
prophesied of the grace that would come to you.”
The prophet also seems to be an office.
1 Ki 19:16 “Also you
shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel. And Elisha the son of
Shaphat of Abel Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place.
They had special powers.
2 Ki 5:3 Then she said
to her mistress, “If only my master were with the prophet who is in Samaria!
For he would heal him of his leprosy.” 4 And Naaman went in and told his
master, saying, “Thus and thus said the girl who is from the land of Israel.”
Apparently it is also one who sings God’s word forth
accompanied by a musical instrument, in the temple.
1 Ch 25:1 Moreover
David and the captains of the army separated for the service some of the sons
of Asaph, of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who should prophesy with harps, stringed
instruments, and cymbals. And the number of the skilled men performing their
service was: 2 Of the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asharelah;
the sons of Asaph were under the direction of Asaph, who prophesied according
to the order of the king. 3 Of Jeduthun, the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, Zeri,
Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah, six, under the direction of their
father Jeduthun, who prophesied with a harp to give thanks and to praise the
LORD.
It’s also someone who speaks for another man.
Ex 7:1 So the LORD
said to Moses: “See, I have made you as God to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother
shall be your prophet.
Prophets were formerly called a seers.
1 Sa 9:7 Then Saul said
to his servant, “But look, if we go, what shall we bring the man? For the bread
in our vessels is all gone, and there is no present to bring to the man of God.
What do we have?” 8 And the servant answered Saul again and said, “Look, I have
here at hand one fourth of a shekel of silver. I will give that to the man of
God, to tell us our way.” 9 (Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of
God, he spoke thus: “Come, let us go to the seer”; for he who is now called a
prophet was formerly called a seer.) 10 Then Saul said to his servant, “Well
said; come, let us go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was.
What are the qualifications of a prophet? How do you know he’s
a real prophet?
He must have the Spirit of the Lord upon him.
Num 11:24-29 So Moses
went out and told the people the words of the LORD, and he gathered the seventy
men of the elders of the people and placed them around the tabernacle. 25 Then
the LORD came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that
was upon him, and placed the same upon the seventy elders; and it happened,
when the Spirit rested upon them, that they prophesied, although they never did
so again. 26 But two men had remained in the camp: the name of one was Eldad,
and the name of the other Medad. And the Spirit rested upon them. Now they were
among those listed, but who had not gone out to the tabernacle; yet they
prophesied in the camp. 27 And a young man ran and told Moses, and said, “Eldad
and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” 28 So Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’
assistant, one of his choice men, answered and said, “Moses my lord, forbid
them!” 29 Then Moses said to him, “Are you zealous for my sake? Oh, that all
the Lord’s people were prophets and that the LORD would put His Spirit upon
them!”
Lk 1:67 Now his
father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:
2 Pe 1:20
knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private
interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of
God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
He may not always be delivering a message of God.
1 Sa 10:5 “After that you
shall come to the hill of God where the Philistine garrison is. And it will
happen, when you have come there to the city, that you will meet a group of
prophets coming down from the high place with a stringed instrument, a
tambourine, a flute, and a harp before them; and they will be prophesying. 6
Then the Spirit of the LORD will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them
and be turned into another man. 7 And let it be, when these signs come to you,
that you do as the occasion demands; for God is with you.”
1 Sa 19:20 Then Saul sent
messengers to take David. And when they saw the group of prophets prophesying,
and Samuel standing as leader over them, the Spirit of God came upon the
messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. 21 And when Saul was told, he
sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. Then Saul sent messengers
again the third time, and they prophesied also. 22 Then he also went to Ramah,
and came to the great well that is at Sechu. So he asked, and said, “Where are
Samuel and David?” And someone said, “Indeed they are at Naioth in Ramah.” 23
So he went there to Naioth in Ramah. Then the Spirit of God was upon him also,
and he went on and prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah. 24 And he also
stripped off his clothes and prophesied before Samuel in like manner, and lay
down naked all that day and all that night. Therefore they say, “Is Saul also
among the prophets?”
Sometimes it is not the Spirit of God.
1 Sa 18:10 And it
happened on the next day that the distressing spirit from God came upon
Saul, and he prophesied inside the house. So David played music with his hand,
as at other times; but there was a spear in Saul’s hand.
Sometimes God uses a prophet because of his office, and he is
unaware.
John 11:49 And
one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know
nothing at all, 50 nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man
should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.” 51 Now
this he did not say on his own authority; but being high priest that year he
prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and not for that nation
only, but also that He would gather together in one the children of God who
were scattered abroad [These are the children of Israel in dispersion.].
What he prophesies, must be fulfilled.
Deu 18:15-22 “The LORD
your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your
brethren. Him you shall hear, 16 according to all you desired of the LORD your
God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, ‘Let me not hear again the
voice of the LORD my God, nor let me see this great fire anymore, lest I die.’
17 And the LORD said to me: ‘What they have spoken is good. 18 I will raise up
for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in
His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. 19 And it shall
be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will
require it of him. 20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name,
which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other
gods, that prophet shall die.’ 21 And if you say in your heart, ‘How shall we
know the word which the LORD has not spoken?’; 22 when a prophet speaks in the
name of the LORD, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the
thing which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously;
you shall not be afraid of him.”
1 Sa 3:19-21 So Samuel
grew, and the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground.
20 And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel had been established
as a prophet of the LORD. 21 Then the LORD appeared again in Shiloh. For the
LORD revealed Himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.
Jer 28:9 “As
for the prophet who prophesies of peace, when the word of the prophet comes to
pass, the prophet will be known as one whom the LORD has truly sent.”
What kinds of prophets are there? We all know that there were
men who were prophets, but there were also women.
Ex 15:20 Then Miriam
the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took the timbrel in her hand; and all the
women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.
Jud 4:4 Now Deborah, a
prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, was judging Israel at that time. 5 And she
would sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the
mountains of Ephraim. And the children of Israel came up to her for judgment. 6
Then she sent and called for Barak the son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali,
and said to him, “Has not the LORD God of Israel commanded, ‘Go and deploy
troops at Mount Tabor; take with you ten thousand men of the sons of Naphtali
and of the sons of Zebulun; 7 and against you I will deploy Sisera, the
commander of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his multitude at the River
Kishon; and I will deliver him into your hand’?” 8 And Barak said to her, “If
you will go with me, then I will go; but if you will not go with me, I will not
go!” 9 So she said, “I will surely go with you; nevertheless there will be no
glory for you in the journey you are taking, for the LORD will sell Sisera into
the hand of a woman.” Then Deborah arose and went with Barak to Kedesh.
Possibly the wife of a prophet was a prophetess.
Isa 8:3 Then I
went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the LORD said to
me, “Call his name Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.”
There were false prophets.
Deu 13:1-5 “If there
arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a
wonder, 2 “and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you,
saying, ‘Let us go after other gods’; which you have not known; ‘and let us
serve them,’ 3 you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that
dreamer of dreams, for the LORD your God is testing you to know whether you
love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 4 You shall
walk after the LORD your God and fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey
His voice, and you shall serve Him and hold fast to Him. 5 But that prophet or
that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has spoken in order to
turn you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt
and redeemed you from the house of bondage, to entice you from the way in which
the LORD your God commanded you to walk. So you shall put away the evil from
your midst.”
Acts 13:6 Now
when they had gone through the island to Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer,
a false prophet, a Jew whose name was Bar-Jesus.
2 Pe 2:1,2 But
there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false
teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even
denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2
And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth
will be blasphemed.
1 Jo 4:1 Beloved,
do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God;
because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
Rev 16:13 And I
saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out
of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.
Rev 19:20 Then
the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his
presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and
those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire
burning with brimstone.
Rev 20:10 The
devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where
the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night
forever and ever.
There were rebellious prophets.
Isa 28:7 But
they also have erred through wine, And through intoxicating drink are out of
the way; The priest and the prophet have erred through intoxicating drink, They
are swallowed up by wine, They are out of the way through intoxicating drink;
They err in vision, they stumble in judgment.
Jer 23:11-20
“For both prophet and priest are profane; Yes, in My house I have found their
wickedness,” says the LORD. 12 Therefore their way shall be to them Like
slippery ways; In the darkness they shall be driven on And fall in them; For I
will bring disaster on them, the year of their punishment,” says the LORD. 13
“And I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria: They prophesied by Baal and
caused My people Israel to err. 14 Also I have seen a horrible thing in the
prophets of Jerusalem: They commit adultery and walk in lies; They also
strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns back from his
wickedness. All of them are like Sodom to Me, And her inhabitants like Gomorrah.
15 “Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts concerning the prophets: ‘Behold, I
will feed them with wormwood, And make them drink the water of gall; For from
the prophets of Jerusalem Profaneness has gone out into all the land.’” 16 Thus
says the LORD of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who
prophesy to you. They make you worthless; They speak a vision of their own
heart, not from the mouth of the LORD. 17 They continually say to those who
despise Me, ‘The LORD has said, “You shall have peace”’; And to everyone who
walks according to the dictates of his own heart, they say, ‘No evil shall come
upon you.’ 18 For who has stood in the counsel of the LORD, and has perceived
and heard His word? Who has marked His word and heard it? 19 Behold, a
whirlwind of the LORD has gone forth in fury; A violent whirlwind! It will fall
violently on the head of the wicked. 20 The anger of the LORD will not turn
back Until He has executed and performed the thoughts of His heart. In the
latter days you will understand it perfectly.
What was a prophet’s mission? To speak a message from God.
Jud 6:7-10 And it came
to pass, when the children of Israel cried out to the LORD because of the
Midianites, 8 that the LORD sent a prophet to the children of Israel, who said
to them, “Thus says the LORD God of Israel: ‘I brought you up from Egypt and
brought you out of the house of bondage; 9 and I delivered you out of the hand
of the Egyptians and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them
out before you and gave you their land. 10 Also I said to you, “I am the LORD
your God; do not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.” But
you have not obeyed My voice.’”
1 Ki 22:13-34 Then the
messenger who had gone to call Micaiah spoke to him, saying, “Now listen, the
words of the prophets with one accord encourage the king. Please, let your word
be like the word of one of them, and speak encouragement.” 14 And Micaiah said,
“As the LORD lives, whatever the LORD says to me, that I will speak.” 15 Then
he came to the king; and the king said to him, “Micaiah, shall we go to war
against Ramoth Gilead, or shall we refrain?” And he answered him, “Go and
prosper, for the LORD will deliver it into the hand of the king!” 16 So the
king said to him, “How many times shall I make you swear that you tell me
nothing but the truth in the name of the LORD?” 17 Then he said, “I saw all
Israel scattered on the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd. And the LORD
said, ‘These have no master. Let each return to his house in peace.’” 18 And
the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “Did I not tell you he would not
prophesy good concerning me, but evil?” 19 Then Micaiah said, “Therefore hear
the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on His throne, and all the host of
heaven standing by, on His right hand and on His left. 20 “And the LORD said,
‘Who will persuade Ahab to go up, that he may fall at Ramoth Gilead?’ So one
spoke in this manner, and another spoke in that manner. 21 “Then a spirit came
forward and stood before the LORD, and said, ‘I will persuade him.’ 22 “The
LORD said to him, ‘In what way?’ So he said, ‘I will go out and be a lying
spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ And the LORD said, ‘You shall
persuade him, and also prevail. Go out and do so.’ 23 “Therefore look! The LORD
has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these prophets of yours, and the
LORD has declared disaster against you.” 24 Now Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah
went near and struck Micaiah on the cheek, and said, “Which way did the spirit
from the LORD go from me to speak to you?” 25 And Micaiah said, “Indeed, you
shall see on that day when you go into an inner chamber to hide!” 26 So the
king of Israel said, “Take Micaiah, and return him to Amon the governor of the
city and to Joash the king’s son; 27 “and say, ‘Thus says the king: “Put this
fellow in prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and water of
affliction, until I come in peace.”’” 28 But Micaiah said, “If you ever return
in peace, the LORD has not spoken by me.” And he said, “Take heed, all you
people!” 29 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to
Ramoth Gilead. 30 And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “I will disguise
myself and go into battle; but you put on your robes.” So the king of Israel disguised
himself and went into battle. 31 Now the king of Syria had commanded the
thirty-two captains of his chariots, saying, “Fight with no one small or great,
but only with the king of Israel.” 32 So it was, when the captains of the
chariots saw Jehoshaphat, that they said, “Surely it is the king of Israel!”
Therefore they turned aside to fight against him, and Jehoshaphat cried out. 33
And it happened, when the captains of the chariots saw that it was not the king
of Israel, that they turned back from pursuing him. 34 Now a certain man drew a
bow at random, and struck the king of Israel between the joints of his armor.
So he said to the driver of his chariot, “Turn around and take me out of the
battle, for I am wounded.”
What kind of prophecies are there?
There are warning prophecies that are conditional.
God warned Moses that He was
going to destroy Israel and make of Moses a great nation. Moses prayed and God
repented. Ex 32:9-14 And the LORD said to Moses, “I have seen this
people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people! 10 Now therefore, let Me alone,
that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make
of you a great nation.” 11 Then Moses pleaded with the LORD his God, and said:
“LORD, why does Your wrath burn hot against Your people whom You have brought
out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12 Why should
the Egyptians speak, and say, ‘He brought them out to harm them, to kill them
in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from
Your fierce wrath, and relent from this harm to Your people. 13 Remember
Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants, to whom You swore by Your own self,
and said to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven; and
all this land that I have spoken of I give to your descendants, and they shall
inherit it forever.’” 14 So the LORD repented from the harm which He said He
would do to His people.
God promised that He would
send His angel to drive out all the “ites.” Ex 33:2 “And I will send My
Angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanite and the Amorite and the
Hittite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite.
Ex 34:11 “Observe what
I command you this day. Behold, I am driving out from before you the Amorite
and the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the
Jebusite.”
Ex 34:24 “For I will
cast out the nations before you and enlarge your borders; neither will any man
covet your land when you go up to appear before the LORD your God three times
in the year.”
Num 14:11-12 Then the
LORD said to Moses: “How long will these people reject Me? And how long will
they not believe Me, with all the signs which I have performed among them? 12 I
will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of
you a nation greater and mightier than they.” 19-20 “Pardon the iniquity of
this people, I pray, according to the greatness of Your mercy, just as You have
forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.” 20 Then the LORD said: “I have
pardoned, according to your word;
Josh 1:4,5 “From the
wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all
the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the
sun, shall be your territory. 5 No man shall be able to stand before you all
the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not
leave you nor forsake you.” Even when it seems absolute, unless the Lord swears
with an oath, if man really blows it, God may not do what He said He would.
Josh 3:10 And Joshua
said, “By this you shall know that the living God is among you, and that He
will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites and the Hittites and
the Hivites and the Perizzites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the
Jebusites.”
We see that God did not
drive out the “ites” because of Israel’s disobedience.
Josh 15:63 As for the
Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not
drive them out; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at
Jerusalem to this day.
Josh 16:10 And they
did not drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites
dwell among the Ephraimites to this day and have become forced laborers.
Jud 2:1-3 Then the
Angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said: “I led you up from
Egypt and brought you to the land of which I swore to your fathers; and I said,
‘I will never break My covenant with you. 2 And you shall make no covenant
with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars.’ But you
have not obeyed My voice. Why have you done this? 3 Therefore I also said, ‘I
will not drive them out before you; but they shall be thorns in your side,
and their gods shall be a snare to you.’”
Jud 2:19-22 And it
came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they reverted and behaved more
corruptly than their fathers, by following other gods, to serve them and bow
down to them. They did not cease from their own doings nor from their stubborn
way. 20 Then the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and He said, “Because
this nation has transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and
has not heeded My voice, 21 I also will no longer drive out before them any of
the nations which Joshua left when he died, 22 so that through them I may
test Israel, whether they will keep the ways of the LORD, to walk in them as
their fathers kept them, or not.”
Jud 3:1-6 Now these
are the nations which the LORD left, that He might test Israel by them,
that is, all who had not known any of the wars in Canaan 2 (this was only so
that the generations of the children of Israel might be taught to know war, at
least those who had not formerly known it), 3 namely, five lords of the
Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who
dwelt in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath. 4 And
they were left, that He might test Israel by them, to know whether they would
obey the commandments of the LORD, which He had commanded their fathers by the
hand of Moses. 5 Thus the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the
Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 6
And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to
their sons; and they served their gods.
No part of the following
prophecy, although given to Ahaz, was fulfilled in his time. Only the birth of
Immanuel took place at all, but that was about 500 years later.
Isa 7:10-22 Moreover
the LORD spoke again to Ahaz, saying, 11 “Ask a sign for yourself from the LORD
your God; ask it either in the depth or in the height above.” 12 But Ahaz said,
“I will not ask, nor will I test the LORD!” 13 Then he said, “Hear now, O house
of David! Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will you weary my God
also? 14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin
shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. 15 Curds and
honey He shall eat, that He may know to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16
For before the Child shall know to refuse the evil and choose the good, the
land that you dread will be forsaken by both her kings. 17 The LORD will bring
the king of Assyria upon you and your people and your father’s house; days that
have not come since the day that Ephraim departed from Judah.” 18 And it shall
come to pass in that day That the LORD will whistle for the fly That is in the
farthest part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of
Assyria. 19 They will come, and all of them will rest In the desolate valleys
and in the clefts of the rocks, And on all thorns and in all pastures. 20 In
the same day the Lord will shave with a hired razor, with those from beyond the
River, with the king of Assyria, The head and the hair of the legs, and will
also remove the beard. 21 It shall be in that day that a man will keep alive a
young cow and two sheep; 22 So it shall be, from the abundance of milk they
give, that he will eat curds; For curds and honey everyone will eat who is left
in the land.
The following prophecy was
not fulfilled. The promise was specific. It named Nebuchadnezzar. But it was
not fulfilled. Neither was the prophecy about Egypt being given to him
fulfilled.
Ezekiel, chapters 26-30
And it came to pass in the eleventh year, on the first day of the month,
that the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, because Tyre has
said against Jerusalem, ‘Aha! She is broken who was the gateway of the peoples;
now she is turned over to me; I shall be filled; she is laid waste.’ 3
“Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Behold, I am against you, O Tyre, and will
cause many nations to come up against you, as the sea causes its waves to come
up. 4 ‘And they shall destroy the walls of Tyre and break down her towers; I
will also scrape her dust from her, and make her like the top of a rock. 5
‘It shall be a place for spreading nets in the midst of the sea, for I have
spoken,’ says the Lord GOD; ‘it shall become plunder for the nations. 6 ‘Also
her daughter villages which are in the fields shall be slain by the sword.
Then they shall know that I am the LORD.’ 7 “For thus says the Lord GOD:
‘Behold, I will
bring against Tyre from the north Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon,
king of kings, with horses, with chariots, and with horsemen, and an army with
many people. 8 ‘He will slay with the sword your daughter villages in the
fields; he will heap up a siege mound against you, build a wall against you,
and raise a defense against you. 9 ‘He will direct his battering rams against
your walls, and with his axes he will break down your towers. 10 ‘Because
of the abundance of his horses, their dust will cover you; your walls will
shake at the noise of the horsemen, the wagons, and the chariots, when he
enters your gates, as men enter a city that has been breached. 11 ‘With the
hooves of his horses he will trample all your streets; he will slay your people
by the sword, and your strong pillars will fall to the ground. 12 ‘They will
plunder your riches and pillage your merchandise; they will break down your
walls and destroy your pleasant houses; they will lay your stones, your
timber, and your soil in the midst of the water. 13 ‘I will put an end to
the sound of your songs, and the sound of your harps shall be heard no more. 14
‘I will make you like the top of a rock; you shall be a place for spreading
nets, and you shall never be rebuilt, for I the LORD have spoken,’ says the
Lord GOD. 15 “Thus says the Lord GOD to Tyre: ‘Will the coastlands not shake at
the sound of your fall, when the wounded cry, when slaughter is made in the
midst of you? 16 ‘Then all the princes of the sea will come down from their
thrones, lay aside their robes, and take off their embroidered garments; they
will clothe themselves with trembling; they will sit on the ground, tremble
every moment, and be astonished at you. 17 ‘And they will take up a lamentation
for you, and say to you: “How you have perished, O one inhabited by seafaring
men, O renowned city, Who was strong at sea, She and her inhabitants, Who caused
their terror to be on all her inhabitants! 18 Now the coastlands tremble on the
day of your fall; Yes, the coastlands by the sea are troubled at your
departure.” ‘ 19 “For thus says the Lord GOD: ‘When I make you a desolate
city, like cities that are not inhabited, when I bring the deep upon you, and
great waters cover you, 20 ‘then I will bring you down with those who
descend into the Pit, to the people of old, and I will make you dwell in the
lowest part of the earth, in places desolate from antiquity, with those who go
down to the Pit, so that you may never be inhabited; and I shall establish
glory in the land of the living. 21 ‘I will make you a terror, and you shall be
no more; though you are sought for, you will never be found again,’ says the
Lord GOD.” 27:1 The word of the LORD came again to me, saying, 2 “Now, son of
man, take up a lamentation for Tyre, 3 “and say to Tyre, ‘You who are situated
at the entrance of the sea, merchant of the peoples on many coastlands, thus
says the Lord GOD: “O Tyre, you have said, ‘I am perfect in beauty.’ 4 Your
borders are in the midst of the seas. Your builders have perfected your
beauty
. . . 27 “Your riches, wares,
and merchandise, Your mariners and pilots, Your caulkers and merchandisers, All
your men of war who are in you, And the entire company which is in your midst,
Will fall into the midst of the seas on the day of your ruin. 28 The
common-land will shake at the sound of the cry of your pilots. 29 “All who
handle the oar, The mariners, All the pilots of the sea Will come down from
their ships and stand on the shore
. . . 32 In their wailing for
you They will take up a lamentation, And lament for you: ‘What city is like
Tyre, Destroyed in the midst of the sea? . . . 34 But you are broken by the
seas in the depths of the waters; Your merchandise and the entire company will
fall in your midst
29:1 In the tenth
year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth day of the month, the word of the
LORD came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, set your face against Pharaoh king of Egypt,
and prophesy against him, and against all Egypt. 3 “Speak, and say, ‘Thus says
the Lord GOD: “Behold, I am against you, O Pharaoh king of Egypt, O great
monster who lies in the midst of his rivers, Who has said, ‘My River is my own;
I have made it for myself.’ 4 But I will put hooks in your jaws, And cause the
fish of your rivers to stick to your scales; I will bring you up out of the
midst of your rivers, And all the fish in your rivers will stick to your
scales. 5 I will leave you in the wilderness, You and all the fish of your
rivers; You shall fall on the open field; You shall not be picked up or
gathered. I have given you as food To the beasts of the field And to the birds
of the heavens. 6 “Then all the inhabitants of Egypt Shall know that I am the
LORD, Because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel. 7 When
they took hold of you with the hand, You broke and tore all their shoulders;
When they leaned on you, You broke and made all their backs quiver.” 8
‘Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: “Surely I will bring a sword upon you and
cut off from you man and beast. 9 “And the land of Egypt shall become desolate
and waste; then they will know that I am the LORD, because he said, ‘The River
is mine, and I have made it.’ 10 “Indeed, therefore, I am against you and
against your rivers, and I will make the land of Egypt utterly waste and
desolate, from Migdol to Syene, as far as the border of Ethiopia. 11 “Neither
foot of man shall pass through it nor foot of beast pass through it, and it shall
be uninhabited forty years. 12 “I will make the land of Egypt desolate in the
midst of the countries that are desolate; and among the cities that are laid
waste, her cities shall be desolate forty years; and I will scatter the
Egyptians among the nations and disperse them throughout the countries.” 13
‘Yet, thus says the Lord GOD: “At the end of forty years I will gather the
Egyptians from the peoples among whom they were scattered. 14 “I will bring
back the captives of Egypt and cause them to return to the land of Pathros, to
the land of their origin, and there they shall be a lowly kingdom. 15 “It shall
be the lowliest of kingdoms; it shall never again exalt itself above the
nations, for I will diminish them so that they will not rule over the nations anymore.
16 “No longer shall it be the confidence of the house of Israel, but will
remind them of their iniquity when they turned to follow them. Then they shall
know that I am the Lord GOD.” ‘ “ 17 And it came to pass in the twenty-seventh
year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, that the word of the
LORD came to me, saying, 18 “Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon caused
his army to labor strenuously against Tyre; every head was made bald, and every
shoulder rubbed raw; yet neither he nor his army received wages from Tyre, for
the labor which they expended on it. 19 “Therefore thus says the Lord GOD:
‘Surely I will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; he
shall take away her wealth, carry off her spoil, and remove her pillage; and
that will be the wages for his army. 20 ‘I have given him the land of Egypt for
his labor, because they worked for Me,’ says the Lord GOD. 21 ‘In that day
I will cause the horn of the house of Israel to spring forth, and I will open
your mouth to speak in their midst. Then they shall know that I am the LORD.’ “
30:1 The word of the LORD came to me again, saying, 2 “Son of man, prophesy and
say, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Wail, ‘Woe to the day!’ 3 For the day is near,
Even the day of the LORD is near; It will be a day of clouds, the time of the
Gentiles. 4 The sword shall come upon Egypt, And great anguish shall be in
Ethiopia, When the slain fall in Egypt, And they take away her wealth, And her
foundations are broken down. 5 “Ethiopia, Libya, Lydia, all the mingled people,
Chub, and the men of the lands who are allied, shall fall with them by the
sword.” 6 ‘Thus says the LORD: “Those who uphold Egypt shall fall, And the
pride of her power shall come down. From Migdol to Syene Those within her shall
fall by the sword,” Says the Lord GOD. 7 “They shall be desolate in the midst
of the desolate countries, And her cities shall be in the midst of the cities
that are laid waste. 8 Then they will know that I am the LORD, When I have set
a fire in Egypt And all her helpers are destroyed. 9 On that day messengers
shall go forth from Me in ships To make the careless Ethiopians afraid, And
great anguish shall come upon them, As on the day of Egypt; For indeed it is
coming!” 10 ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “I will also make a multitude of Egypt
to cease By the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. 11 He and his people
with him, the most terrible of the nations, Shall be brought to destroy the
land; They shall draw their swords against Egypt, And fill the land with the
slain. 12 I will make the rivers dry, And sell the land into the hand of the
wicked; I will make the land waste, and all that is in it, By the hand of
aliens. I, the LORD, have spoken.” . . . 20 And it came to pass in the
eleventh year, in the first month, on the seventh day of the month, that the
word of the LORD came to me, saying, 21 “Son of man, I have broken the arm of
Pharaoh king of Egypt; and see, it has not been bandaged for healing, nor a
splint put on to bind it, to make it strong enough to hold a sword. 22
Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Surely I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt,
and will break his arms, both the strong one and the one that was broken; and I
will make the sword fall out of his hand. 23 ‘I will scatter the Egyptians among
the nations, and disperse them throughout the countries. 24 ‘I will strengthen
the arms of the king of Babylon and put My sword in his hand; but I will break
Pharaoh’s arms, and he will groan before him with the groanings of a mortally
wounded man. 25 ‘Thus I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but
the arms of Pharaoh shall fall down; they shall know that I am the LORD, when I
put My sword into the hand of the king of Babylon and he stretches it out
against the land of Egypt. 26 ‘I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations
and disperse them throughout the countries. Then they shall know that I am the
LORD.’”
The book of Jonah is the
key to the failure of the above prophecies. God probably repented when the king
of Tyre, and then the king of Egypt repented in sack cloth. We don’t know that
they did, but we may surmise that from the following. Jonah’s whole prophecy
were these words: “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” They were
not fulfilled. We know why. God repented.
Jonah 3:2-4 “Arise, go
to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you.” 3
So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now
Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three-day journey in extent. 4 And
Jonah began to enter the city on the first day’s walk. Then he cried out and
said, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”
Some prophecy is unconditional. Some is already fulfilled.
Mat 1:22,23 So
all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord
through the prophet, saying: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and
bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God
with us.”
Mat 2:5,6 So
they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the
prophet: 6 ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among
the rulers of Judah; For out of you shall come a Ruler Who will shepherd My
people Israel.’”
Mat 2:15 and
was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken
by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.” This
fulfilled prophecy shows us that fulfillment is not the same as we seem to
think fulfillment is. This quote from Hosea is about Israel coming out of
Egypt.
Mat 2:17 Then
was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying: 18 “A voice was
heard in Ramah, Lamentation, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for
her children, Refusing to be comforted, Because they are no more.”
Mat 2:23 And he
came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was
spoken by the prophets, “He shall be called a Nazarene.”
Mat 3:3 For
this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying: “The voice of one
crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths
straight.’”
Mark 1:2,3 As
it is written in the Prophets: “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,
Who will prepare Your way before You. 3 The voice of one crying in the
wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight.’”
Lk 3:4 as it is
written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying: “The voice of
one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths
straight.’”
John 1:23 He
said: “I am ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Make straight the way
of the LORD,”’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”
Mat 4:13-16 And
leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the
regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken
by Isaiah the prophet, saying: 15 “The land of Zebulun and the land of
Naphtali, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles: 16
The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and upon those who sat
in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned.”
Mat 8:17 that
it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He
Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.”
Mat 12:17-21
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: 18
“Behold! My Servant whom I have chosen, My Beloved in whom My soul is well
pleased! I will put My Spirit upon Him, and He will declare justice to the
Gentiles. 19 He will not quarrel nor cry out, nor will anyone hear His voice in
the streets. 20 A bruised reed He will not break, and smoking flax He will not
quench, till He sends forth justice to victory; 21 And in His name Gentiles
will trust.”
Mat 13:34,35
All these things Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables; and without a
parable He did not speak to them, 35 that it might be fulfilled which was
spoken by the prophet, saying: “I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter
things kept secret from the foundation of the world.”
Mat 21:4,5 All
this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet,
saying: 5 “Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you,
Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”
Mat 27:35 Then
they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be
fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “They divided My garments among
them, And for My clothing they cast lots.”
Lk 4:17-21 And
He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book,
He found the place where it was written: 18 “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to
heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight
to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the
acceptable year of the LORD.” 20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to
the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were
fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is
fulfilled in your hearing.”
Acts 2:14-21
But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men
of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my
words. 15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third
hour of the day. 16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 ‘And it
shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My
Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young
men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams. 18 And on My
menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And
they shall prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in heaven above and signs in the
earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned
into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and
awesome day of the LORD. 21 And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the
name of the LORD shall be saved.’”
Acts 15:15-18
“And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written: 16
‘After this I will return and will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen
down; I will rebuild its ruins, and I will set it up; 17 So that the rest of
mankind may seek the LORD, even all the Gentiles who are called by My name,
says the LORD who does all these things.’ 18 “Known to God from eternity
[lit. age] are all His works.
Many times “prophecy” is just that
something is similar to something else, illustrated.
Mat
2:15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled
which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I
called My Son.”
Mat
27:9 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,
“And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced,
whom they of the children of Israel priced,
Mat
27:10 “and gave them for the potter’s field, as the LORD directed me.”
John
13:18 “I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but
that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up
his heel against Me.’ This is quoted from Psa 41:9 when David was talking
about Ahithophel.
Acts
1:16 “Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy
Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide
to those who arrested Jesus.” When did David prophesy about Judas? He didn’t
refer to him by name. Judas was not predicted by name or any resemblance, but
Judas did illustrate some of the things that happened to David which were
similar to Jesus.
Acts
1:17 “for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this ministry.”
Acts
1:18 Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; and falling
headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails gushed out.
Acts
1:19 And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field
is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.
Acts
1:20 “For it is written in the book of Psalms: ‘Let his dwelling place be
desolate, and let no one live in it’; and, ‘Let another take his office.’” These
do not apply to Judas specifically, only illustratively.
There were prophets in the early church.
Acts 11:26-28
And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a
whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And
the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. 27 And in these days
prophets came from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 Then one of them, named Agabus,
stood up and showed by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine
throughout all the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius Caesar.
Acts 13:1 Now
in the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers:
Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been
brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
Acts 19:6 And
when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they
spoke with tongues and prophesied.
Acts 21:9-11
Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied. 10 And as we stayed many
days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11 When he had come
to us, he took Paul’s belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, “Thus says
the Holy Spirit, ‘So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this
belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’”
Rom 12:6 Having
then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use
them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith;
Rom 16:26 but
now has been made manifest, and by the prophetic Scriptures has been made known
to all nations, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, for
obedience to the faith;
1 Co 11:4 Every
man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head. 5 But
every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head,
for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved.
1 Co 12:10 to
another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of
spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation
of tongues.
1 Co 12:28,29
And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets,
third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps,
administrations, varieties of tongues. 29
Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of
miracles?
1 Co 13:2 And
though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all
knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but
have not love, I am nothing.
1 Co
14:1,3-6,22,24,29 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially
that you may prophesy. 3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and
exhortation and comfort to men. 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself,
but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I wish you all spoke with tongues,
but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who
speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive
edification. 6 But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what
shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by
prophesying, or by teaching? 22 Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those
who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for
those who believe. 24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an uninformed
person comes in, he is convinced by all, he is convicted by all. 29 Let two or
three prophets speak, and let the others judge.
Eph 3:5 which
in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been
revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets.
Eph 4:11 And He
Himself gave some apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastor
teachers.
1 Ti 1:18 This
charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously
made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare.
1 Ti 4:14 Do
not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with
the laying on of the hands of the eldership.
Pophecy became useless. It passed away when the full
revelation of the mystery was revealed to Paul in his prison epistles of
Ephesians and Colossians.
1 Co 13:8-12
Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether
there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish
away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is
perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. 11 When I was a
child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but
when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror,
dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as
I also am known.
There was a strong penalty for adding to
or taking away from the prophecy of Revelation.
Rev 22:10,18,19
And he said to me, “Do not seal the words of the prophecy of this book, for the
time is at hand.” 18 For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the
prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the
plagues that are written in this book; 19 and if anyone takes away from the
words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book
of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this
book.
The writings of many prophets are not Scripture.
1 Ch 29:29 Now the
acts of King David, first and last, indeed they are written in the book of
Samuel the seer, in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the
seer,
2 Ch 9:29 Now the rest
of the acts of Solomon, first and last, are they not written in the book of
Nathan the prophet, in the prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite, and in the visions
of Iddo the seer concerning Jeroboam the son of Nebat?
2 Ch 12:15 The acts of
Rehoboam, first and last, are they not written in the book of Shemaiah the
prophet, and of Iddo the seer concerning genealogies? And there were wars
between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all their days.
2 Ch 13:22 Now the
rest of the acts of Abijah, his ways, and his sayings are written in the annals
of the prophet Iddo.
