Is It Faith or Performance?
It seems that there is always controversy about the Christian life. Some follow the teachings of a powerful man like John MacArthur, exaggerate them in certain areas and believe strongly that it is all performance. Others, take the teachings of a strong man like Bob George, exaggerate them and believe that it’s nothing but faith. Why’s there so much controversy? I think it comes from a failure to thoroughly study the scriptures from a dispensational view.
I want to analyze Paul’s epistles on our subject, “Is It Faith or Performance?” To begin, much of the problem comes from applying the passages for justification, to the Christian life. The only way to tell the real meaning of words is from the context.
Our
justification depends on two things. The source of our justification is
Christ’s faith-faithfulness. Rom 1:17 For in it [the gospel] the
righteousness of God [This is a recurrent theme in these salvation passages.]
is revealed. [from out of] faith, ek
pistew" [Christ’s faithfulness. This is the same word that is found
in Rom 3:3, where it must refer to God’s faithfulness. “For what if some
did not believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God thn pistin tou Qeou without
effect?”] unto faith; [our belief] as it
is written, “The just shall live by [out of] faith.”. The just shall live [become alive] because
of Jesus Christ’s fatihfulness. Rom 3:21-28,30 “But now the righteousness of God apart from the law
is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith
in [faithfulness of] Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For
there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of
God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in
Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith,
to demonstrate His righteousness,
because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously
committed, 26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier
of the one who has faith in Jesus. 27. Where is boasting then? It is excluded.
By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude
that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. 30 since
there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith.
Gal
2:16-21 is talking about the same thing, justification. “knowing that a man
is not justified by [out of]
the works of the law, but by faith
in [faithfulness of] Jesus Christ,
even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that
we might be justified by faith in [faithfulness of] Christ,
and not by [out of] the works of the law; for by the works of the law no
flesh shall be justified. 17 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ,
we ourselves also are found sinners, is Christ therefore a minister of sin?
Certainly not! 18 For if I build again those things which I destroyed, I make
myself a transgressor. 19 For I through the law died to the law that
I might live to God.
Let me repeat that. I died to the law that I might live to God. In other words, I died to the law that I might be cleared from the law so I might live before God.
This
is again repeated in 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ. But I live, yet not I, but
Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by
faith[fulness] in [that of] the Son of God,
who loved me and gave Himself for me. It was His faithfulness that made the
righteousness of God available to me. It was His faithfulness that gave me new
life. This is justification. 21 “I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through
the law, then Christ died in vain.” Gal 3:2-7; Gal 3:8-9,11-14,21-25
And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith,
preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations
shall be blessed.” 9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing
Abraham. 11 But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is
evident, for “the just shall live by faith.” 12 Yet the law is not of faith,
but “the man who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ has redeemed us from
the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed
is everyone who hangs on a tree”), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come
upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the
Spirit through faith. 21 Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly
not! For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly
righteousness would have been by the law. 22 But the Scripture has confined all
under sin, that the promise by faith in [faithfulness of] Jesus
Christ might be given to those who believe.
23 But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the
faith which would afterward be revealed. 24 Therefore the law was our tutor to
bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after faith has
come, we are no longer under a tutor.
The reception of justification depends on our faith in Christ. Gal 3:26, “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. Acts 16:31 “So they said, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.’” Rom 10:9,10 “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
Our Christian walk is also by faith. Rom 14:23 “But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin.” 2 Co 5:7 “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Co 10:3-5 “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”
Eph 3:11-12,16-18 “according
to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in
whom we have boldness and access with confidence through [His] faith in Him
[His faithfulness] 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His
glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, 17
that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to
comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and
height.”
Col 2:6-7 As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.
But our Christian life is [also] performance unto God. Rom 12:1 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.” Rom 14:7,8 “For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. 8 For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.” 2 Co 5:9,14,15 “Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. 14 For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; 15 and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.” 1 Th 2:4,12 “But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts. 12 that you would walk worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.” Because He tests the hearts, He knows if we are doing things by the motivation and power of the Holy Spirit or by the flesh—thing that look good but are motivated for the wrong reason. 1 Th 4:1 “Finally then, brethren, we urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus that you should abound more and more, just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God.” 1 Ti 6:17 “Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.” God is the only one who can produce the Christian life in us. We must depend totally on Him for the performance in our lives. That’s why God instructed Paul to write to Timothy: 2 Ti 2:15 “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
Our Christian life is also performance before man. We should walk blamelessly before men. 2 Co 4:1-2 “Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we do not lose heart. 2 But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.” The greatest gift of the Holy Spirit we can utilize in this area of this duty is self control. We must meditate on Him and Who He is and then allow the Lord to have control of our lives in order to live before men. 2 Co 6:3,14-7:1 “We give no offense in anything, that our ministry may not be blamed. 14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ‘I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they shall be My people.’ 17 Therefore ‘Come out from among them and be separate’, says the Lord. ‘Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you. 18 I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters’, says the LORD Almighty.’” 7:1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. Eph 5:1-4,8,15 “Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. 3 But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; 4 neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 15 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise.” 1 Co 4:2 Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.
We
should be examples. 1 Ti 1:15-16 “This is a faithful saying and worthy
of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of
whom I am chief. 16 However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first
Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going
to believe on Him for everlasting life.” Notice, it was Jesus Christ who would
“show all longsuffering, as a pattern” through the believer. We can’t do this
ourselves. 2 Th 3:7-14 “For you yourselves know how you ought to follow
us, for we were not disorderly among you; 8 nor did we eat anyone’s bread free
of charge, but worked with labor and toil night and day, that we might not be a
burden to any of you, 9 not because we do not have authority, but to make
ourselves an example of how you should follow us. 10 For even when we were with
you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. 11
For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not
working at all, but are busybodies. 12 Now those who are such we command and
exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their
own bread. 13 But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary in doing good. 14 And
if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not
keep company with him, that he may be ashamed.” But how did Paul want them to
be this good example? He told us in Phi 3:9-19 “and be found in Him, not
having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in [of] Christ, the
righteousness which is from God”. Here is Paul’s prayer: 3:10 “that I
may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings,
being conformed to His death, 11 if, by any means, I may attain to the
out-resurrection from the dead. [The perfect Christian life.] 12. Not that I
have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay
hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do
not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those
things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,
14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ
Jesus. 15 Therefore let us, as many as would be mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God
will reveal even this to you. 16 Nevertheless, to the degree that we have
already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind. 17.
Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have
us for a pattern. 18 For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell
you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19 whose
end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their
shame—who set their mind on earthly things.”
We
must remember, all of this is done by the power of God as He performs the
Christian life in us as we have faith and allow Him to do it. 1 Ti 4:12-16
“Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in
conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13 Till I come, give
attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. 14 Do not neglect the
gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of
the hands of the eldership. 15 Meditate on these things; give yourself
entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. 16 Take heed to
yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save
both yourself and those who hear you.” Tit 2:1-14 But as for you, speak
the things which are proper for sound doctrine: 2 that the older men be sober,
reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; 3 the older women
likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much
wine, teachers of good things—that they admonish the young women to love their
husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good,
obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. 6
Likewise exhort the young men to be sober-minded, 7 in all things showing
yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity,
reverence, incorruptibility, 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one
who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you. 9 Exhort
bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well pleasing in all
things, not answering back, 10 not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity,
that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things. 11 For the
grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us
that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly,
righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and
glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave
Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for
Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.” 1 Ti 6:12, 17-19
“Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were
also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many
witnesses. 17 Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty,
nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all
things to enjoy. 18 Let them [to] do good, that they [to] be rich
in good works, [to be] ready to give, willing to share, 19 storing up for
themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on
[of the] eternal life.” Tit 3:1-2,8,14 “Remind them to be subject to
rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, 2 to speak
evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men. 8
This is a faithful saying, and these things I want you to affirm constantly,
that those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works.
These things are good and profitable to men. 14 And let our people also learn
to maintain good works, to meet urgent needs, that they may not be unfruitful.”
1 Th 2:9-12 For you remember, brethren, our labor and toil; for laboring
night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, we preached to you
the gospel of God. 10 You are witnesses, and God also, how devoutly and justly
and blamelessly we behaved ourselves among you who believe; 11 as you know how
we exhorted, and comforted, and charged every one of you, as a father does his
own children, 12 that you would walk worthy of God who calls you into His own
kingdom and glory.”
How can we perform? We can’t, but God can transform us. Rom 12:2 “And do not be conformed to this world, [How?] but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Rom 13:13,14 “Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.” How do we put on the Lord Jesus Christ? By filling your mind, heart, life with Him. Gal 5:22-26 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.” Again, this can only be done by faith. Col 2:5-7 “For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ. 6 As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord [by faith], so walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.”
